Wha?
I have read this story several times, and it still makes absolutely no sense. So this writer who had his story spiked for the NYT magazine is not a real person, is not a man, but people have met her, but may be a woman. Gus Van Sant has met a person he refers to as "Emily" a few times, but the article refers to her as he. All have appeared to have met him/her and talked to, uh, it. Either this is the worst-written piece I've ever read, or there's something else altogether going on.
